Each year the Kentucky Florists’ Association host its annual Kentucky Designer of the Year Contest during the  annual convention. This contest is the premier floral design competition held in the state and allows designers to showcase their talents through three popular floristry categories (wedding, sympathy, and arrangement).  The four designers with the highest scores after the preliminary round will compete in a live, on-stage, surprise box challenge to determine the Kentucky Florists' Association Designer of the Year.

Press Release for the 2017 Kentucky Florists' Association Design of the Year Competition

Louisville, KY (August 7th, 2017) - The Kentucky Florists’ Association (KFA) held their sixtieth annual convention July 28 through July 30 at the Holiday Inn Louisville East - Hurstbourne in Louisville, Kentucky. Each year during the convention a floral design competition is held to determine the Kentucky Florists’ Association's Designer of the Year. This year the competition was sponsored by KD & Company and Floriology Institute. The 2017 Designer of the Year is Lisa Thompson of Kroger Floral in Nicholasville, Kentucky. This year’s runner-up Keith Bauer of Huntingburg Greenhouse in Huntingburg, Indiana.

The Designer of the Year contest consist of two parts. In the first part, the competing designers enter an arrangement in each of the three categories that they have created fitting the category and theme determined by the Design Competition Chair. This year for the wedding category “60 Years of Weddings,” the designers choose a decade and created a bridal bouquet and head piece. In the sympathy category, designers created “A Timeless Tribute” interpreting a classic sympathy design into a modern rendition. Finally, in the arrangement category “It’s All About Texture,” each designer created a design of their choice. The arrangements were then anonymously judged by a panel of evaluators. The results were as follows:

Wedding Category: 60 Years of Weddings
First Place: Keith Bauer, Huntingburg Greenhouse in Huntingburg, IN
Second Place: Lisa Thompson, Kroger Floral in Nicholasville, KY
Third Place: Dave Campbell, David's Floral in Lexington, KY
Honorable Mention: Flora Ducatez, Bel-Air Florist in Versailles, KY
Honorable Mention: Randall Powell, Foley's Florist & Gift Shop in Berea, KY

In the second part of the competition the four designers with the highest total combined score must compete in a live, on-stage design challenge. Each designer is given a surprise box consisting of the same flowers, foliages, and containers. The designers then have twenty minutes to complete a design of their choice. The arrangements are again anonymously judged by a panel of evaluators. The scores from the live competition are doubled and added to the designers’ total score. The designer with the highest score earns the title Designer of the Year. The final final four designers (in not particular order) were:

Keith Bauer, Huntingburg Greenhouse in Huntingburg, IN
Dave Campbell, David's Floral in Lexington, KY
Randall Powell, Foley's Florist & Gift Shop in Berea, KY
Lisa Thompson, Kroger Floral in Nicholasville, KY

This year’s Designer of the Year will go on to compete in the 2018 Mid-Ameica Cup design competition during the Arkansas Florists Association annual convention. The Designer of the Year also received a $1000 scholarship to the Floriology Institute and will be featured as a main stage designer at the 2018 KFA convention.
